Rotaract Cyprus has successfully organised a Reforestation initiative which had a double sustainable effect i.e. Fellowship through Service!
Οver 18km² of lush forest were burnt during a fierce fire that tore through the Troodos mountains in Cyprus in the summer of 2016. After extinguishing the fire, the Cyprus Forest Department prepared a comprehensive action plan so as to bring life back to the forest. Within this plan, Constantinos Anayiotos, ERIC Country Representative 2017-2019, initiated and organised this project with the support of the VDRR and the presidents of the participating Clubs.
The diary marked Sunday, February 5th, 2017 when Rotaractors from all over Cyprus including family members, friends and other individuals came together to provide their support. This Pancyprian project was a great opportunity to build up stronger bonds between the members of the Clubs and enhance the friendships among Rotaractors.
Having successfully planted more than 300 trees including pine trees, golden oaks, sycamore and maple trees, Rotaractors passed the message that, while many years are required to restore a forest after a destructive fire, just a little help from all of us can go a long way!
Christos Alexandrou, VDRR 2016-2017, stated: ‘’As long as there is need of planting and making our country greener, we will continue our efforts of giving something back to nature’’.
