Warsaw Rotaract Club kickstarted 2018 with a bit of warmth. They have decided to organize an event for both the “Na Paluchu” animal shelter as well as the Rev. Baudouin Foster Home in Warsaw. “We were very glad that both institutions approached our idea with such great enthusiasm!” said Jakub Wdowiarek, the Vice-president of the Club. During the meet-and- greet the children could present the puppies with special snuffle mats they had prepared beforehand. “We could tell all the puppies were really happy, as shown by their wagging tails” adds Anna Rodziewicz, the Club’s Secretary. Additionally, the Home presented the shelter with some mattresses and bed sheets, and the children received some games and gadgets from the shelter. With help from the Rotaractors as well as the volunteers from the animal shelter, the children were able to learn how to adopt an animal but also how to take of them. Later, we could all play together on a special playground where both the animals as well as people can bond and have some fun. What are snuffle mats? They are simple toys which can be enjoyed by both older dogs as well as puppies. They are also very easy to make. All you need is a rubber doormat with holes and some strips of fabric (for example fleece). You need to attach the strips to the doormat so that you end up with a kind of a fluffy rug where you can hide dog treats. The dogs will sniff around looking for their favorite snacks. “This is great fun for the dogs which also helps to calm them down” explains Ms. Patrycja Janosz from the shelter. “I am very glad the children could prepare some gifts for the puppies” said Ms. Maria Kolankiewicz, the headmistress of the Rev. Baudouin Foster Home. “This has been a very important lesson of empathy and the joy of giving”.
