Time period:

Plastic pollution among other pollution is a rapidly growing issue globally. We as European Rotaractors want to make a difference and stop destroying our planet

Some facts about the issue:
Each year, more than 8 million metric tonnes of plastic end up in oceans, wreaking havoc on marine wildlife, fisheries and tourism, and cost at least $8 billion in damage to marine ecosystems. When plastic debris breaks down from wear and tear, it does not decompose the way other products like wood do – but instead breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces, becoming “microplastic” (BBC). Fishes do often eat the microplastic and therefore when humans and other animals eat fish it will be passed on them as well. If present trends continue, by 2050, there will be 12 billion metric tons of plastic in landfills. That amount is 35,000 times as heavy as the Empire State Building.

According to the European Commission, more than 80% of marine litter is plastics. The products covered by these restrictions constitute 70% of all marine litter items. Due to its slow rate of decomposition, plastic accumulates in seas, oceans and on beaches in the EU and worldwide. Plastic residue is found in marine species – such as sea turtles, seals, whales and birds, but also in fish and shellfish, and therefore in the human food chain. While plastics are a convenient, adaptable, useful and economically valuable material, they need to be better used, re-used and recycled. When littered, the economic impact of plastics encompasses not just the lost economic value in the material, but also the costs of cleaning up and losses for tourism, fisheries and shipping. There is lot of information about the issue online but here is a video that is recommended to watch: Are you eating plastic for dinner?

Instructions for the project:
Your Rotaract club may choose what ever project they want to as long as it is related to the End plastic now theme. The project has to be a club project since we want to be fair and evaluate the same level projects only. District level projects are not considered in the competition but are still encouraged so we can make bigger impact. The project can be a social media campaign around some local issue, educational project, hands on -project or whatever your club thinks it is the most suitable way to make a difference.

Some concrete examples of the project what your club can do:
• collecting trash
• make an educational program in the local community
• recycle initiative – making bracelets/ bags out of used plastic
• encourage people to make small differences in their everyday behavior – not buy water bottles or
something similar
• find a visible issue in your local community and create awareness of the issue
Please note that these are just examples and you are highly encourage to your creativity and imagination
